What is “Plastic surgery”?

Plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery is a uniquely broad surgical specialty and encompasses both complex and more straightforward procedures around the body. Plastic surgeons have an array of different techniques and technological solutions at our disposal to correct and reconstruct almost any body part. Despite the common assumption that it is mainly “cosmetic”, surgeons routinely perform highly complex procedures and are often called on by other specialists to help in their most difficult cases. Plastic surgeons apply well proven principles, up to date research as well as a wealth of experience and microsurgical skills to benefit our patients.

A fully trained Plastic surgeon will use the term FRCSI(Plast) after their name as an assurance that they have passed the required stringent national exams and are appropriately trained and qualified. They will have expertise in skin cancer, complex head and neck reconstruction, breast reconstruction, burns, congenital deformity, as well as hand and trauma surgery.

Paul Sullivan is a fully trained, Irish plastic surgeon working in the HSE and private practice. His specialist interests include skin cancer, hand conditions and aesthetic surgery as well as many other conditions requiring complex reconstruction. Time will be taken to explain your condition, answer any questions and complete aftercare will be provided.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the commonest diagnosed malignancy in Ireland each year; thankfully, most are localised problems which can be treated and cured by simple removal. Most will never spread beyond the original site but in some higher risk examples they can have that potential. Like most medical problems the earlier they are diagnosed and treated the better; smaller lesions require less to be removed and surgically fixed and for some types early removal will reduce the risk of spread and give a better chance of a good outcome.

Hand Surgery

For many years, Hand Surgery has been somewhat relegated to a secondary status, compared with many other surgical subspecialties; however, for those of us who are passionate about its treatment (both orthopaedic and plastic surgeons) and have expertise in the management of the conditions that affect the hand and upper limb there is much that we can offer our patients. Fellowship trained hand surgeons have taken the time to hone their expertise and have a unique perspective and collaborate together harnessing the strengths of their background specialties to tackle the most difficult of problems.

The Hand is the most commonly injured area of the body and in many ways it is how we interact with our environment. Hand pathology, from either trauma or other acquired conditions, can lead to significant disability and impair our patient’s quality of life. Thankfully, there have been many significant improvements in the management of hand pathology from small joint replacement surgery, to the treatment of peripheral nerve issues and other conditions that were previously untreatable.
